"We must remember that intelligence is not enough. Intelligence plus character--that is the goal of true education. The complete education gives one not only power of concentration, but worthy objectives upon which to concentrate."
                                             --Martin Luther King, Jr.

"When Christianity tells you to feed the hungry it does not give you lessons in cookery. When it tells you to read the Scriptures it does not give you lessons in Hebrew and Greek, or even in English grammar. It was never intended to replace or supersede the ordinary human arts and sciences: it is rather a director which will set them all to the right jobs, and a source of energy which will give them all new life, if only they will put themselves at its disposal."

                                             --C.S. Lewis (Mere Christianity)

"Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world" (John 1:29).

For 2000 years the Church has been confessing Jesus as the precious Lamb of God. Below are the words of prayers that Christians have been praying and singing for those 2000 years. Agnus Dei is Latin for Lamb of God. Read the lyrics. Then listen and be blessed!

"Pie Jesu" Latin Lyrics

Pie Jesu, pie Jesu, pie Jesu, pie Jesu

Qui tollis peccata mundi

Dona eis requiem, dona eis requiem

Pie Jesu, pie Jesu, pie Jesu, pie Jesu

Qui tollis peccata mundi

Dona eis requiem, dona eis requiem

Agnus Dei, Agnus Dei, Agnus Dei, Agnus Dei

Qui tollis peccata mundi

Dona eis requiem, dona eis requiem

Sempiternam Sempiternam Requiem

"Pie Jesu" English Lyrics

Merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus

Who takes away the sins of the world

Grant them rest, grant them rest

Merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus, merciful Jesus

Who takes away the sins of the world

Grant them rest, grant them rest

Lamb of God, Lamb of God, Lamb of God, Lamb of God

Who takes away the sins of the world

Grant them rest, grant them rest

everlasting everlasting rest

NTE243 Transubstantiation Assignment (John 6):

               (1)  Read the online piece by Rich Deems to familiarize yourself with some of the key issues.
                      www.godandscience.org/doctrine/eucharist.html

               (2)  Listen to the debate between Rob Zins and Patrick McCafferty and answer the questions
on the related handout. Begin listening to the debate at 19:30 minutes. NOTE: most of the
questions are NOT answered in the order of the presentation but are synthetic questions
requiring you to analyze and summarize statements made along the way by both debators.
Carefully read over all questions before listening to the debate in order to be alert to the answers
as they come up along the way and as they receive further elaboration at various points.

NTE243  Andy Stanley Audio Link to a powerful and life-changing message on John 11.
The message is titled "When God is Late". It was originally given on 10/23/2011 and is Part 3 of a 3 Part Series titled "When God?" The link below takes you to the message which may start playing automatically. Video link may not work in IE 11; seems to work well in Chrome.

For homework answer the discussion questions on the web link provided by Northpoint and turn them in as directed by your instructor. You may also access the discussion questions if you click here.
NTE243  Timothy Keller selection on "Exclusivism" from his book The Reason for God. One of the primary objections to Christianity is its exclusivism. This is perceived as narrow-minded, bigoted, and intolerant in our pluralistic world. Read the selection by Keller and write up a 1 page reflection paper for homework credit as directed in class. Interact with Keller and his reasoning. Is it sound? What is good/bad/helpful/etc. about his argumentation? Use Scripture in your answer. (To help with the Scripture verses see the PDF of the handout that I forgot to bring to class: Exclusivism in John and the NT.)
NTE243  A helpful selection from the famous testimony of Simon Greenleaf as to the historicity and reliability of the Gospels as eyewitness evidence. (click here) (PDF).
Summarize in 1 page what you take to be his main arguments for Homework Credit.
Simon Greenleaf [1793-1853] was one of the founders of Harvard Law School and the 19th century’s greatest living expert on what counted as valid evidence in a court of law. He began examining the NT in order to disprove its validity and show that it was all fabrication and mythology. He ended by becoming a believer and writing this book: a treatise that is well worth reading in its entirety.
NTE243  The inspiring personal testimony of Lee Strobel, well-known Christian author and apologist. He began as a journalist and hard core skeptic but came to faith in Christ after studying the evidence for the empty tomb and the resurrection. (click here).
Answer the following 2 questions for Homework Credit: (1) What are Strobel's four "E" points? Briefly define/describe them and their significance. (2) What is "the Criterion of Embarassment" and why is it so important for historicity?
NTE243   A powerful selection from Nabeel Qureshi's book on Islam and Christianity titled No God but One: Allah or Jesus? This may be the best single book available on the overall topic. Islam, for example, denies that Jesus was ever crucified. Islam is wrong. And Qureshi shows one of the reasons why. Correlate what Qureshi says with "the Criterion of Embarassment" and explain why no one would ever have proclaimed a crucified Messiah unless he was actually crucified. (click here).
